Want to get ahead? Follow these five simple steps to get a jumpstart on your career development journey:

  • Step 1: Utilize transfer-specific services. Have you connected with the Transfer Student Services office or the Transfer Mentor Program? Both offer all kinds of programs and opportunities for those who have transferred to UT Dallas.
  • Step 2: Set up your free Handshake account. Handshake is the software platform we use at UT Dallas to connect you with career-related opportunities. Log in now and get started!
  • Step 3: Meet with a Career Consultant. Don’t make the mistake of postponing this step. Set up a Career Consultant meeting today. The best part? They’re free!
  • Step 4: Evaluate your skill set. Search through Handshake and take a close look at the in-demand job skills you see there. Do you have those? If not, meet with a Career Consultant, start taking free LinkedIn Learning courses to fill in the gaps and explore opportunities via informational interviews (pdf)
  • Step 5: Review career-related resources.  Now that you’re a student at UT Dallas, you’ve got access to the additional resources below and other free career-related services.

One of the biggest mistakes you can make is to wait until you’re about to graduate to connect with the University Career Center.

Follow the steps above, check out the resources below, and get in touch with the University Career Center’s team with any questions.
